The glaciers that moved through the Grand River Valley deposited a rich and complex soil that imparts mineral and earthy characteristics to our wines. Lake Erie, also a remnant of the glacier, moderates the local climate, apparent by cooling the evenings after a warm summer day and warming our winters which protect the vines from extreme cold. The Grand River Valley has all the ingredients for growing quality vinifera grapes and producing exceptional wines.
It is true, “you can’t make good wine from bad grapes”, we, therefore, made the decision to grow and ferment our own grapes. We concentrate on the best efforts within the vineyards, so to produce the highest quality of fruit possible. Our vineyard staff continuously adjusts our procedures in the vineyards to ensure that all grapes receive the attention required to reach maturity at harvest. From handpicking a single leaf exposing a grape cluster to the sun or sacrificing inferior fruit, we are confident that only the best and most favorable fruit will be used to produce Laurentia wines.
We use state-of-the-art equipment in our production facilities to ensure our winemaker has all the exceptional tools to produce the best wines possible. Our 7,600 square-foot building houses not only multiple varieties of oak barrels used to produce our award-winning Stoltz Block Cabernet, but also large concrete vessels, our big green eggs that are used for our Rieslings and Unoaked Chardonnays. An investment which is evident in each bottle of Laurentia wine.
Laurentia is now in its ninth year of producing wines. Each year, we believe brings forth a better product due to our best efforts in the field and the knowledge we have obtained from past production experiences, which both inherently improve our winemaking. This hard work is reflected in our wine club memberships as it has doubled nearly every year. Our club members will receive the “fruits of our labor” as we are able to hand select the best of the season’s exclusively for them.
Our goal is not only to bring recognition to Laurentia Winery and Vineyards but also to the Grand River Valley, our home. The Grand River Valley is a unique and beautiful region of Ohio inherited and sculpted by the most recent and dynamic of geologic processes. We invite you to our winery to taste and experience the difference a glacier can make.
